Movie Download Websites – A Reality Check

I’m sure we’ve all come across movie download websites that promise “unlimited downloads” of your favorite movies. For what appears to be a reasonable fee, some offer a yearly or lifetime membership that allows you to get a hold of thousands of movies, ranging from classics to recent blockbusters. And it’s all available right from the convenience of your own PC! Sounds like a great deal, right?

And better yet, many of these movie download websites promise you these great films in high DVD quality, or a format compatible with your Sony PSP, iPod, or entertainment system. Some don’t just offer movies, but music too! And for a one time membership fee? This looks too good to be true!

And unfortunately, it is.

Although I haven’t had a chance to investigate all of these movie download websites, I’ve done some digging on a popular one called The Movie Downloads (I cannot provide the full link for legal reasons, but you can Google it and read about it for yourself. Anyway, the site is very slick-looking, well-organized, and easy to read site that seems to clearly spell out everything it has to offer, from FAQs to tech support. By the professional layout of the homepage, it certainly looks legit.

Read on, and find out why you’ll feel like an idiot if you sign up…

What it claims: They boast unlimited downloads, a wide range of movies and music, and a variety of formats to choose from (.avi, divx, .mov, .mp3, etc). The service claims to be spyware/virus free (for those of you using Windows), and for mac users, The Movie Downloads says it’s totally mac friendly.

They even offer software (if you need it) to burn the files you download onto CDs and DVDs. With a tech support system in place, this site will refund your money if you are not satisfied for any reason.

All that’s left for you to do is sign up for their service, choose the membership option that’s best for you, then pay the $49.99 fee. From there, you should have instant access.

What really happens: Once you’re in, you define yourself as a mac or PC user, then select whether or not you’re an “Advanced” or “Beginner” user. For “Advanced” users, you are directed to download uTorrent (Windows) or Tomato Torrent (Mac).

Here’s the dumb part…

Programs like uTorrent and TomatoTorrent (other than having dumb names) are already available online for free! If you selected “Beginner” user, you’re simply directed to download Limewire, which is also free!. The bottom line is this: You never had to drop $49.99 in the first place!

Moral of the story: Movie download websites such as The Movie Downloads trap people who are a little less web/tech savvy by simply convincing them to pay good money for stuff that’s available free of charge.

Lesson #1 is this: Don’t believe free movie download websites that offer films/music/pictures/porn/beer for free. It ain’t gonna happen. Even if you see the occasional “free movie download” links on the Google ads displayed on my very own site, avoid them and click something else.

Lesson #2: Even if you are one step ahead of the crooks and are already an expert in using bit-torrent or P2P software, watch your back. Downloading gobs of movies, TV shows, and music using bit torrent sites/services such as can get you into a heap of legal trouble. Sure, thousands of other people (mostly kids) are doing it, they feel the thrill of “beating the system,” enjoy bragging about it, and the authorities don’t have the resources to police the entire internet (not yet, at least).

But every once in a while someone gets caught. And it’s ugly. And those who get busted never thought they would. Is it worth it?

I’m not telling you to stick to legitimate pay sites like Netflix or iTunes because I have ads for them running on my website (I only endorse products/services that I actually use myself), but those companies are legal, affordable, and dependable. Maybe it’s not “cool” to play by the rules, but last I checked it’s not very “cool” to get slapped with a lawsuit either.

Special thanks to my “little friends” for their investigative assistance

Ways to Watch a Movie

MOVIES AT HOME: Renting

We all know the economy sucks. Everybody is cutting down on extra purchases and things they don’t necessarily need. Movies are an easily dispensable purchase. If money is tight, then of course it’s logical to cut down on a few movie outings. Well below are a few ways to watch films in a more wallet friendly way.

Redbox

Pros:

* Open 24/7
* Only cost a dollar
* Can return rented DVD to any redbox

Cons:

* Fines if forget to return DVD
* Can’t pay with cash

These are giant red boxes with a touch screen on the front. They are usually located at Super-marts such as Wal-Mart and pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens. You must to have a credit card to rent the movie. Otherwise everyone would just put a dollar bill and not return the DVD. If you forget to return it then you will be charged are fine on your credit card. I had a friend that forgot they rented a movie from Redbox and left in their car for about a month. Only remembering that they had rented a movie after they saw all the fines on their credit statements. Needless to say they got charged pretty penny for the fees/fines. So if you do go with this convenient choice for renting a movie, just make sure you read Redboxs’ policies and terms and return the DVD with 24 hours of renting it. To find a Redbox location near you check out the official Redbox website.

Library

Pros:

* Completely FREE
* What’s better than free

Cons:

* Not newest movies
* Library hours

I think people forget that you can rent movies, CDs, books for free at libraries. If you don’t belong to a library find one through Publiclibraries.com. It lists all the public libraries in the United States. Find you state, then your city; it will list all the public libraries in your city; their addresses, phone numbers, and a link to their website if they have one. Most of the time all you have to do to set up an account at a library is show them a valid address. My local library has an amazing collection of DVDs. They have rated Rs, documentaries, TV show seasons, and even some DVDs that I couldn’t find in a movie store. You can usually rent up to two weeks, that’s a whole lot better than the one-nighters from most movie renting stores. The only thing missing from a library are the late working hours. Most libraries close at 5 to 7pm on the weekdays. If you have a job then it can be a challenge to reach the library at its visiting hours, but hey who ever free didn’t come with a price.

Netflix

Pros:

* Watch movies online anytime
* Rented movies sent in mail
* Low cost

Cons:

* Only certain movies available online
* Availability changes

Netflix is a very convenient way to rent movies. You can rent movies and have them sent your address, and you just send them back when you are done. You can also sign up for Netflix online. If you get an account online you can access it anytime and stream movies instantly to your computer or TV. The only issue with the instant streaming is that some of their movies are not available to watch to stream with your computer/TV. They have a only certain amount of movies that you can watch instantly. They also rotate the movies that are available instantly. This is a good and a bad thing, for example if you want to watch a movie that you didn’t get to finish previously it might not be available anymore, but on the other hand there will always be a nice mix up and new movies available to you. I have a Netflix account and let me tell you that is an outstanding collection of movies. It is definitely worth the $8.99 a month.
